Qualifications: The Axis Mill Setup/Programmer is responsible for setting up, programming, and operating multi-axis milling machines (3-, 4-, and/or 5-axis) to manufacture precision machined components. This role ensures efficient machine set-up, accurate programming, and high-quality output in a production environment, collaborating closely with engineering, tooling, inspection, and production functions.
Key Responsibilities
Review engineering drawings, specifications, and manufacturing routings to determine required machining processes, cutting tools, fixturing, and program strategy.
Develop, edit, and optimize CNC milling programs (G-code/M-code) and CAM toolpaths for multi-axis milling machines.
Set up milling machines including loading fixtures/vises, installing tooling, setting zero points, work offsets, checking axis alignment, and verifying machine readiness.
Perform first-part run‐outs, prove‐out programs, perform in‐process inspection, make necessary adjustments to maintain tolerances and cycle times.
Troubleshoot and resolve machining issues such as tool wear, chatter, program errors, fixturing problems, and machine calibration.
Collaborate with machining operators, quality/inspection, and tooling engineers to ensure parts meet GD&T, surface finish and dimensional requirements.
Maintain documentation: setup sheets, tooling lists, program libraries, machine logs, SPC/tracking data (if applicable).
Maintain a clean, safe work area and adhere to company health & safety, machine maintenance and shop floor standards.
Identify continuous improvement opportunities for tooling, cycle time, machine utilization, scrap/rework reduction, and support manufacturing cost goals.
Required Qualifications & Skills
High School diploma or GED; technical/trade school or associate degree in machining/manufacturing preferred.
Minimum 2-5 years experience programming and setting up multi‐axis CNC mills in a production environment.
Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T.
Proficient in CAM software (Mastercam, Esprit, GibbsCAM, etc.), programming and editing CNC code.
Experience with 3-, 4-, or 5-axis milling machines, cutting tools, fixturing, workholding.
Hands-on set up ability (tooling installation, machine zeroing, workholding adjustments) and use of precision measuring instruments (micrometers, bore gauges, CMM, etc.).
Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally, stand for long periods, and work overtime as required.
Excellent communication and team‐collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in lean manufacturing or continuous improvement initiatives.
Previous exposure to high-mix/low-volume or aerospace/defense manufacturing environment.
Familiarity with machine controls (Fanuc, Haas, Siemens), DNC systems, tool management systems.
